Lyman Spitzer, an early proponent of space-based astronomy, helped usher the concept of a space telescope through Congress. The ultimate result of
                       his efforts, the Hubble Space Telescope, is visible in the clean room behind him.


                       shuttle flights resumed and astronomers could realize the dream of a working telescope in space. On April 25, 1990,
                       astronauts on the STS-31 mission deployed Hubble into orbit from the Space Shuttle Discovery  with every expectation that

                       stunning new views would result.
